About this course:
The SHSAT Foundations course is designed for students who want to begin preparing for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) by strengthening the core academic skills needed to succeed on the exam. Ideal for students currently in 6th grade or early 7th grade, this program focuses on building the reading, writing, vocabulary, and math skills that form the foundation of effective SHSAT preparation.
In this structured small-group class (capped at 12 students), students receive guided instruction and targeted practice to improve comprehension, reasoning, and problem-solving. Lessons focus on strengthening the academic habits and thinking skills that students will rely on as SHSAT preparation progresses.
Verbal Skills:
Students develop stronger reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary through targeted lessons and practice activities. They learn how to analyze passages, recognize common grammatical patterns, and expand vocabulary in ways that support success on SHSAT-style questions.
Math Skills:
Students build and reinforce essential math skills that support more advanced problem-solving. Through guided lessons and practice exercises, they strengthen mathematical reasoning, improve accuracy, and learn strategies that prepare them for the multi-step question types encountered on the SHSAT.
Practice & Feedback:
Throughout the course, students participate in structured practice activities that allow them to apply what they learn during each session. Instructors provide ongoing feedback to help students identify areas for improvement, track their progress, and build confidence as their skills develop.
By the end of the course, students will have developed the academic foundation and confidence needed to transition into more advanced SHSAT preparation programs, including the SHSAT Summer Intensive.
