Beginning with the fall 2025 administration, the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) will transition to a fully digital format. This computer-based assessment will incorporate built-in supports for English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities. It will also introduce new item types beyond the traditional multiple-choice and grid-in questions.
In 2026, the SHSAT will further evolve into a computer-adaptive test (CAT), meaning the difficulty and selection of questions will adjust in real time based on each student’s performance. Paper-based exams will only be available for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans that specifically require paper testing accommodations. All other students will complete the exam on a computer, in alignment with the implementation timeline.
